Pauluskirche
The site where St. Paul's Church stands today was already a religious place of worship in Roman times. During the excavation for the current church, the Roman walls and also wall remains of various predecessor churches were discovered and included in the plan drawing for the new church. Particularly noteworthy in the choir room: the fresco "Legend of the Three Living and the Three Dead" from the 14th/15th century.
Beschreibung
HIstory
As early as 1871, spa guests complained about the poor condition of the old church. It was destroyed again and again in the course of several wars and usually only repaired in a makeshift manner. In 1892, the new church was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The foundation stone was laid on 18 October 1893. The new church, built in red sandstone, was consecrated after almost five years of construction on 26 June 1898 in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden and his wife Luise. The earlier churches still stood on Roman walls about 4 m high, about half of which were removed when this church was built. The tower is no longer on the west side as in the previous churches, but in the northeast angle between the nave and transept. At about 45 m long and 35 m wide in the transept, the church was considerably larger than its predecessors. The west side above the main entrance is decorated with a colourful rosette. However, due to the installation of the organ, it is no longer visible from the inside. The choir room is embellished by four large windows. The depictions from left to right show: Birth of Christ, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Blessing of the Children.
Altar, organ and bells
The neo-Gothic altar installed in the choir room in 1898 was replaced by the then modern altar as early as 1960. This altar was supplemented in 1964 by a hand-carved crucifix, a late Romanesque work from the Upper Rhine region.
The present organ was built in 1964 by Friedrich Weigle of Stuttgart-Echterdingen. It has mechanical sliding chests with 37 sounding stops, distributed over three manuals and a pedal, plus an electric setting system. In 1974, the console was redesigned.
The bells in the tower consist of four bronze bells. There are several gravestones on the walls of the church.
